Last week, I witnessed an interesting discussion about Love in Dark Eldar society.
It was really hard for me to explain my point of view because of my English so I just made troll face and continued painting my minis.

so guys what do you think - do DE feel love or do not?

This one just got me at the very first sight.
Instant story to that one.
It is definitely my favourite piece of all your pictures. Everything about it is perfect - the pose, the colour, even the facial expressions, though they are only half-visible.

And yes, I am sure that Dark Eldar can feel love - though it is not comparable to the thing we call love, since they are so - in every sense of the word - alien to us. Or they feel the same and do no longer know what to call it. In a passionate people as Dark Eldar are I cannot imagine that love is an unknown thing.

At the very least, I think that Dark Eldar "love" would be rather different than what we more moral and sane humans define as love; although I do think it does happen as Kabalite Trueborn get birthed. From what I learned on Eldar they have to be in a long and consistent relationship, as Eldar biology literally does not allow one-night-stands to cause pregnancy.

I may be wrong as my opinion seems to be too focused on mechanics.

As far as i know about this, they do feel Love, but Partneships themself often tend do be something Dom/Sub like. In a short Story in one of the Black Library Books, an Archon falls in love with a female archon, that newly arrived in Commoragh, he tries many ways of proving himself worthy to her (like slaving the whole human population on a Planet and then presenting her the Planet and the Slaves as a Gift), but she wont even let him into her Palace. After another attempt (he tries to Steel a Monolith-Crystal from a Necron tomb World, since he heared Woman like Juwelery) he loses nearly his whole Cabale and his Daugther dies in teh Escape as the Necrons awake. After this he is so filled with sorrow, that he just murders his way into the Chamber of the Female Archon and "confesses" to her, what his Love to her made him loose. Well as some Kind of Happy End, she seems to fall in love, not with him, but with this incredible sorrow that he is carrying and submits to him. Guess this is what you may call a DE Love Story.

I imagine that they do fall in "love" sometimes, although it might not be recognizable to us. It would be obsessive, narcissistic, and probably masochistic/sadistic. Dark Eldar are nothing if not emotionally intense. Do they experience tenderness and affection? Well, that seems less likely to me.  I don't think it has been discussed in the novels or other storyline materials because love/sex/etc. is usually avoided and they don't get too involved in describing the nuances of social norms. I imagine that "love" (or probably more accurately described as obsessive attachment) it is more common among the younger than the older. Those in positions of leadership definitely can't afford anything but the most casual of sexual diversions.

They feel pleasure in the pain and suffering of all.
Sergios117 Featured By Owner Nov 14, 2014
Lust, maybe love as well. Love is an emotion.
Calistian-Zathos Featured By Owner Oct 16, 2014
Well, I think they could have love but it would be twisted and sick to us, Dark Eldar don't mate much because getting so close to someone unarmored is a deathwish in the Dark City
limeheer Featured By Owner Oct 13, 2014
they do. with high likelihood way more intense then even craftworld eldar
kuropentacle Featured By Owner Apr 26, 2014
But dark eldars have children there are also pure blood dark eldar in my point of view there are rarely form of romance in the high society of Commorragh.
Angle-of-dark Featured By Owner Apr 9, 2014  Hobbyist
I think they don't, personally. They live for pleasure and to rip the souls from others in order to continue living. between having to protect themselves from murder by even their own race, and taking souls from other races in order to continue their own existence, i'm pretty sure romance is out of the question!
dredgazebo Featured By Owner Mar 19, 2014
That is a complicated question and it really depends on your exact definition of love.

I would argue that the Dark Eldar do feel love, but they don't really understand it,  nor do they express it in any form that we would consider sane.

For further reference, read the short story Mistress Baeda's Gift, from the book Fear the Alien. Malwrack's supposed love for Baeda was really just obsession, but really did love his daughter Sawor, although he didn't recognize it as such.

They can and do - but its extremely dangerous.................just finding another whom they can trust enough to admit it would be difficult and one mistake..............

Commoragh (and 40K in general for that matter) is huge enough so it's rather safe to assume that almost anything you can think of exists there, somewhere.

Dark Eldar can love and do love. But it is a love that consumes itself. It d not last long, for they always seek new emotion, new diversions...they love, but i doubt they love for more than some century. And what is a century for someone that can span the millennia?
Seraph-Azriel Featured By Owner Jun 24, 2013
Eldar are supposed to feel emotions far more keenly than humans can. We can probably assume that Eldar love, albeit in a very constricted, reserved fashion, given that they are very concerned of becoming like their cousins. For Dark Eldar, what would be love for them would not be something that we humans could call a healthy relationship. Dark Eldar are INTENSE. They are slaves to sensation, and likely feel even more keenly than their lighter cousins. Thus, "love" for them would be a tempestous, violent, obsessive attachment. A Dark Eldar in love is going to be like a super sadomasochistic yandere.

Looking over the comments, I've noticed that a lot of people have drawn parallels between drow and the Dark Eldar. I'd like to be perfectly clear in that this is like comparing a lizard to a dragon. The Drow pale in comparison to the Dark Eldar. GW has made it clear that the DE are amongst the most cruelest and vile of the myriad of races that terrorizes Warhammer 40,000. The Drow are labeled in the 3.5e Monster Manual as "usually neutral evil". You have examples of drow that have rejected their screwed up society like Drizzt Do Urden, his father Zaknafein, worshippers of Eilistraee, and Liriel Baenre. In all of the Warhammer 40,000 lore, there has NEVER been a case of a Dark Eldar becoming good. They are an entire race that is beyond redemption.
Nydrid Featured By Owner Feb 17, 2014
I agree completely with the first paragraph.

But i have to disagree about the Drow paling in comparison to Dark Eldar. While the DE are MOST DEFINITELY far crueler and evil, they are (as you said) slaves to sensation. I don't think the Drow are incapable of being as evil as DE, but for a race that has fallen so far in their debauchery that they need to feed on agony, there is nothing more than pain. The DE are physically and mentally incapable of going beyond their craving for pain. Drow can surpass their lot in life. While the drow are evil, they aren't so physically attached to it that they cant think differently.

But this doesn't put either race at a place above the other. I like comparing them because i got into DE because of the Drow. And the two races are similar in some ways. I don't think it would be like comparing a lizard to a dragon. More like comparing Manga and Comic books. I think its like two very different views of a similar concept, a race that knows nothing but evil.

I don't have any friends in either of these fandoms, maybe we can talk sometime :D
Seraph-Azriel Featured By Owner Feb 17, 2014
Hmmm.  After thinking over my argument, I would agree with your second paragraph.  Simply because one of them is far more evil than the other doesn't dismiss the importance of the other race entirely.

I think I'd like that.
Klerych Featured By Owner Apr 29, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
In my opinion they love. But in an obsessive, possessive way. As far as I remember from my DE codex Eldar in general(although the craftworld ones are stoic now) experience all their emotions and feelings much stronger than any other race. That's why DE take cruelty to the extremes - it's never enough. Same goes for passion imho. Although while the Archon(or Archoness[?]) may be possessive over his/her lover, I can easily see them take any other woman to bed if they wanted to.

I think that Dark Eldar are just dark elves in space, and WFB dark elves are very similar to the ones from Forgotten Realms universe AND one of the first books about Drizzt Do'Urden show the relations between Malice and her husbands. It's not a romantic love(although I can see it happen in the spires of Commorragh), but a feeling full of wicked passion for each other. A bit like vikings maybe? Their women might fight with them too, like viking shield-maidens.

Dark Eldar love harder than anyone else.
nezkha Featured By Owner Jan 28, 2013
Could imagine DEs being similar to Vulcans, only much more sinister: They learned to shut away their emotions in order to survive. Because there is no time for emotions like love or pity in their war. The tragedy would be that by doing so they become more and more like the enemy...
Perhaps this picture shows what they lost?
SolitaireMarauder Featured By Owner Dec 6, 2012
An slave too cute to be ill-treated? love is there, all Eldar feels all passions stronger than a human can. THe Dark Berthreen are just too consumed by darkness for love to take the form that we know as love. But it is still there, and if it is there, it is capable of any prowess, just like everywhere else.

I do like how your image is ambiguous in nature:

- One the one side, it nearly seems like two Dark Eldar cuddling ;) He seems to touch her softly, carefully, and certainly not harming the woman. Almost human tenderness, which is in a certain way not unrealistic (should Dark Eldar REALLY be as brutal as in the fluff, they would have wiped each other out a long time ago. Logic demands that they also do have their peaceful moments ;))
- One the other hand, the Dark Eldar background still shines through: The dressed male character takes a dominant gesture, while the naked female appeards more submissive, he is the only one doing the touching, but not vice cut a long story short: There is also some "Let's make clear who is the boss" message in the pic.

Combining these two aspects in the pic really makes it shine. Well done :)

I think the expression on her face takes it deeper too. She looks as if a predator is biding its time. While his face seems a lot more consumed by the moment, she's somewhat detached furthering that he is dominant but her patient, tolerant look ma imply that may not be the case forever. If the message is "Let's make clear who is the boss" than her response is "So you think". I guess it takes an eldar mind to play chess with your life while being interment :P

Hahaha I can agree with this. I almost thought it looked like she may be sleeping as well but its almost hard to tell if her eyes are closed or partially open. Reading your comment though it can seem that way as well, as though she's planning a comeback of sorts. Maybe even pretending to be submissive to give him a false sense of security? The vagueness of this piece is honestly quite fun to play with I must say.

I believe they can feel attraction and desire... but I doubt love. As a requirement of love is some level of trust.
Unless of course, as the first poster suggested, it's self infatuation.
